7 steps to people management

This article simplifies people management for aspiring and new managers. The benefits of this approach include engaged team, efficient processes and better results.

Step 0: Manager understands team members through 1x1s and other interactions, their strengths, interests, motivation, appetite to take up challenges and fears.

Step 1: Manager understands the business goals and expectations from team. Prepares list of outcomes expected end of business cycle.

Step 2: Manager translates the outcomes into results that can be tracked and measured.

Step 3: Manager maps the results to people in team as goals, based on understanding gained in step 0.

Step 4: Manager discusses the individual goals and how his/her results contribute towards overall team goals. Manager communicates the rationale of selecting the team member for the responsibilities.

Step 5: Team member looks at current processes in the organisation and reviews with stakeholders for improving them. Manager gives autonomy to the team to define the efficient process.

Step 6: Team members and manager collectively review results periodically. Manager focuses on people capability to improve processes and build skills. Team members improve based on continuous manager feedback and adapt processes for desired outcomes.
